Samokov is a city with a modern outlook, combining in its development heritage, culture, sport spirit and the beauty of the surrounding nature. Located in the high Samokov valley 950 meters above sea level, crossed by the clear waters of the Iskar River and its tributaries and surrounded by several mountains – Rila, Plana, Vitosha, Verila and Ihtiman Sredna Gora, the town is known for its rich cultural and historical heritage. The modern city was founded in the early 15th century on the ruins of an ancient settlement. The city achieved economic prosperity in the 17th to 19th century due to the extraction of iron in the famous during that time Samokov ovens and forges, called “Samokov”. They give the name of the city that remains unchanged till this day. Currently ongoing excavations reveal rich cultural layers of Thracian, Roman and Byzantine period.
Samokov successfully builds its future and attracts tourists in and around the city while keeping its history and recreate in harmony the Renaissance spirit and modern development.
